CHAPTER 10
SOCIAL NETWORKING
Networking is interacting with others for mutual benefit, which is integral to the sales of your book and your success as a writer. For anyone who is shy or reluctant to do so, all I would say is try it, and you'll like it. Even authors with a niche market need to network to raise awareness of their book and raise their literary profile. The more you network effectively, the more successful you and your book will be. Networking is basically telling people about you and your book one-to-one, and it is one of the most effective means of âviral (word-of-mouth) marketingâ, or if done on the internet, word-of-mouse marketing.
WORD OF MOUTH MARKETING
If you want to maximise the commercial success of your book, and let others know that you're a writer, then you cannot be a shrinking violet or keep your light under a bushel. Rather, you need to burn the shoe leather and tell people about it. Some writers will literally climb Mt. Everest (as discussed in Chapter 17) to generate publicity for their book, but others can be similarly effective by joining the right literary organizations.
There are general UK organizations for writers, as well as specific associations based on genre, gender, religion, region, and so on.
In general, there is:
Authors' Club - Welcomes writers, agents, publishers, critics, journalists and anyone involved in literature and the written word. Administers a number of awards and organises regular talks and dinners with well-known speakers.
Authors' Licensing & Collecting Society - Represents authors in terms of photocopying and lending rights for their books. The society is a main resource and leading authority on copyright matters and writers' collective interests.
The Society of Authors - For authors with agents only, advising them on various aspects of book publishing. There are groups within the SoA for academic writers, children's book writers, educational writers, and medical writers, as well as some regional groups. Annual subscription can be costly.
